Careful packing prevents breakage and
loss of small and fragile items. If you follow these simple packing
tips you'll avoid damage to your goods and make maximum use of the
space in your storage locker and moving truck. |
Appliances: Secure all appliance doors shut when moving. Wrap a paper mat around each item for protection. The refrigerator, washing machine, and dryer are excellent for storing bedding, towels and clothing. Always clean your stove before moving. |
Beds: Tie bed rails together with rope. Label all the pieces of the frames to make assembly easier. Place covers on mattresses to keep clean during moving and storage. |
Books: Don't pack all of your books together. Instead, pack them in small containers to make lifting easier. Cover them with plastic to prevent water damage. |
Chairs: Protect all chair legs by wrapping them in packing paper. Leave slipcovers on upholstered chairs and cover them with plastic covers to prevent water damage. |
Clothing: Clothing that ordinarily hangs in a closet should be packed in a carton. Remember, clothing makes excellent packing material. |
Dishes: Take caution when packing your dishes. Wrap each dish individually and cushion the inside of the carton with crumpled newspaper, packing paper, or bubble wrap. Keep the cartons light to make transporting easy and safe. |
Lamps:
Pack the lampshades separate from the lamps. Make sure to take out
the light bulbs before wrapping the lamp in a towel or blanket and
transporting. |
Mirrors: Wrap mirrors with paper mats and when storing, never lay flat. You should always store a mirror up on the edge. |
Tables: If possible, remove legs from large tables when storing. |
Cartons: Go easy on yourself, keep the weight under 25-30 lbs. Mark the outside of the carton so you can identify what is in it without going through the trouble of opening it.

Always mark cartons "Fragile" if they contain glass, ceramics or anything else that is easily broken. Do not store flammables, or perishables.
